What is a Percentage?

A percentage is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. The word percent comes from the Latin “per centum”, which means “per hundred”. When you see 50%, it literally means 50 out of every 100, or 50 divided by 100.

Percentages are everywhere in daily life: sales discounts, test scores, interest rates, statistics, growth rates, and much more. Understanding percentages helps you make better financial decisions, interpret data correctly, and solve everyday math problems quickly.

Essential Percentage Formulas

There are four main types of percentage calculations you will encounter. Here are the formulas for each:

1. Find X Percent of a Number
(Percentage / 100) x Number = Result
Example: What is 25% of 80? (25 / 100) x 80 = 20
2. Find What Percent One Number is of Another
(Part / Whole) x 100 = Percentage
Example: 20 is what % of 80? (20 / 80) x 100 = 25%
3. Calculate Percentage Increase
((New Value – Old Value) / Old Value) x 100 = % Increase
Example: From 50 to 75: ((75 – 50) / 50) x 100 = 50% increase
4. Calculate Percentage Decrease
((Old Value – New Value) / Old Value) x 100 = % Decrease
Example: From 100 to 80: ((100 – 80) / 100) x 100 = 20% decrease
5. Find the Original Price After Discount
Original Price x (1 – Discount% / 100) = Final Price
Example: $100 with 30% off: $100 x (1 – 0.30) = $70

Mental Math Shortcuts

These tricks will help you calculate percentages quickly in your head without a calculator:

  • 10% trick: Move the decimal point one place left. 10% of 250 = 25
  • 5% trick: Find 10% then divide by 2. 5% of 80 = (8) / 2 = 4
  • 1% trick: Move the decimal point two places left. 1% of 350 = 3.5
  • 50% trick: Simply divide by 2. 50% of 88 = 44
  • 25% trick: Divide by 4. 25% of 120 = 30
  • 15% tip trick: Find 10%, then add half of that. 15% of $40 = $4 + $2 = $6
  • 20% trick: Divide by 5. 20% of 75 = 15
  • Reversible percentages: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8 (both equal 4)

When to Use Each Calculation

Calculation TypeWhen to Use ItReal-World Example
Percentage of a NumberFinding a portion of a total amountCalculate 20% tip on a bill, find 6% sales tax
Number to PercentageConverting a fraction or score to percentTest score of 42/50, completion rate of 85/100
Percentage IncreaseMeasuring growth or markupSalary raise, price increase, revenue growth
Percentage DecreaseMeasuring reduction or discountSale discount, weight loss, cost reduction
Percentage DifferenceComparing two values without a reference pointComparing prices between stores, analyzing data

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing percentage increase with percentage points: Going from 20% to 30% is a 50% increase, not a 10% increase. The difference in percentage points is 10, but the percentage increase is 50%.
  • Forgetting order matters: A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does NOT return to the original value. If something goes from $100 to $150 then down 50%, it ends at $75, not $100.
  • Mixing up part and whole: Make sure you are dividing by the correct number. To find what percent 20 is of 80, divide 20 by 80, not 80 by 20.
  • Incorrectly stacking discounts: A 20% discount plus a 30% discount is NOT a 50% discount. They multiply: 0.8 x 0.7 = 0.56, which is a 44% total discount.
  • Using the wrong base: For percentage change, always divide by the original (old) value, not the new value.

Practical Tips for Everyday Use

  • Shopping: To quickly calculate a 30% discount, find 10% of the price and multiply by 3, then subtract from the original price.
  • Tipping: For a 20% tip, move the decimal left one place (10%) and double it. For 15%, do 10% plus half of that.
  • Comparing deals: Convert all discounts to percentages to compare apples to apples. A $20 discount on a $100 item (20%) is better than a $30 discount on a $200 item (15%).
  • Interest rates: Remember compound interest grows exponentially. A 5% annual return doubles your money in about 14 years.
  • Test scores: To convert a fraction to a percentage, divide the score by the total and multiply by 100. Or use our Percent Calculator to check the answer instantly.

Restaurant and Dining

Restaurant Bill Split
You and 3 friends have dinner. The bill comes to $127.50 and you want to leave an 18% tip. How much does each person pay in total?
Answer
$37.69 per person
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate 18% tip: (18 x 127.50) / 100 = $22.95
  • Add tip to bill: $127.50 + $22.95 = $150.45
  • Split between 4 people: $150.45 / 4 = $37.69 each
Quick Tip Calculation
Your lunch bill is $24.80. You want to leave a 20% tip. What is the total amount you should pay?
Answer
$29.76
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate 20% tip: (20 x 24.80) / 100 = $4.96
  • Add to original bill: $24.80 + $4.96 = $29.76
Service Charge Added
A restaurant bill shows $156 before a mandatory 15% service charge. What is the final bill amount?
Answer
$179.40
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate 15% service charge: (15 x 156) / 100 = $23.40
  • Add to bill: $156 + $23.40 = $179.40

Shopping and Discounts

Black Friday Deal
A laptop originally priced at $899 is on sale for 35% off. What is the sale price?
Answer
$584.35
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate discount amount: (35 x 899) / 100 = $314.65
  • Subtract from original: $899 – $314.65 = $584.35
Member Discount
You have a store membership that gives you 12% off all purchases. If an item costs $75, how much will you pay after your discount?
Answer
$66
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate 12% discount: (12 x 75) / 100 = $9
  • Final price: $75 – $9 = $66
Additional Discount Stack
A $200 jacket is marked 25% off. At checkout, you get an additional 10% off the sale price. What do you actually pay?
Answer
$135
How we calculated this:
  • First discount (25% off): $200 – $50 = $150
  • Second discount (10% off $150): $150 – $15 = $135
  • Total savings: $65 (32.5% off original)

School and Grades

Test Score
You scored 42 out of 50 points on a math test. What is your percentage score?
Answer
84%
How we calculated this:
  • Divide score by total: 42 / 50 = 0.84
  • Convert to percentage: 0.84 x 100 = 84%
Grade Improvement
Your grade improved from 72% to 85%. What is the percentage increase in your grade?
Answer
18.06% increase
How we calculated this:
  • Find the difference: 85 – 72 = 13 points
  • Calculate percentage: (13 x 100) / 72 = 18.06%
Attendance Requirement
You need 90% attendance to pass. If there are 180 school days, how many days can you miss maximum?
Answer
18 days maximum
How we calculated this:
  • 90% attendance means you can miss 10%
  • Calculate 10% of 180: (10 x 180) / 100 = 18 days

Finance and Business

Sales Commission
You earn a 7% commission on all sales. If you sold $15,000 worth of products this month, what is your commission?
Answer
$1,050
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate 7% of $15,000: (7 x 15000) / 100 = $1,050
Price Increase
A product price increased from $45 to $54. What is the percentage increase?
Answer
20% increase
How we calculated this:
  • Find the difference: $54 – $45 = $9
  • Calculate percentage: (9 x 100) / 45 = 20%
Tax Calculation
An item costs $85 before tax. If sales tax is 8.5%, what is the total price including tax?
Answer
$92.23
How we calculated this:
  • Calculate 8.5% tax: (8.5 x 85) / 100 = $7.23
  • Add to original price: $85 + $7.23 = $92.23
