Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardised measure of academic achievement. Use these calculators to track semester performance, update your cumulative GPA, or plan what grades you need to reach your goals.

How to Calculate GPA

GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credits
Example: Calculate Semester GPA

English (B+, 3 credits): 3.3 x 3 = 9.9 points

Math (A, 4 credits): 4.0 x 4 = 16.0 points

History (B, 3 credits): 3.0 x 3 = 9.0 points

Total Points = 34.9, Total Credits = 10
GPA = 34.9 / 10 = 3.49

Weighted vs Unweighted GPA

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all courses. An A is always 4.0.

Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses:

  • Regular courses: A = 4.0
  • Honors courses: A = 4.5
  • AP/IB courses: A = 5.0

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GPA?

Generally, 3.0+ is good, 3.5+ is very good, and 3.7+ is excellent. For graduate school, aim for 3.5+. Medical and law schools typically expect 3.7+.

Can GPA be higher than 4.0?

On an unweighted scale, no. Weighted GPAs that give extra points for AP/Honors classes can exceed 4.0.

Do employers care about GPA?

For entry-level positions, some employers have GPA cutoffs (often 3.0). After a few years of experience, GPA becomes much less important.

How do pass/fail courses affect GPA?

Pass/Fail courses typically do not affect your GPA. A “Pass” gives credit but no grade points.

How much can I raise my GPA in one semester?

It depends on your current credits. With fewer credits, each grade has bigger impact. Use the Goal Calculator above to plan.
